1) Using a bullet mike
Cup the mike in both hands to form a tightly sealed pocket of air. The seal should be so tight that no air escapes. I modify my mikes with pieces of foam to put what is essentially an O ring around the mike body where it meets the grill.
The harp should not touch the grill; it should be held 1 to 1-1/2 inches away. Laying the harp directly on the grill will produce a very bright sound; too bright for me, though some people like it.
2) Tongue blocking/shifting
Tongue blocking/shifting is absolutely essential. Used along with puckering, it creates some great dynamics. A player should learn to play with power and precision from both the left and right sides of the mouth.
3) General tips
- Don’t blow too hard.
- Reduce “noise” from your throat as much as possible.
- Move the harp, not your head.
- Don’t bend notes just to bend notes.
